 Joining Good Shepherd Episcopal Church

If you are interested in Baptism into the Christian Church, Confirmation or Reception into the Episcopal Church, please call Amanda DeViney in the Church office. If you are interested in joining Good Shepherd, please call or email our Newcomer Minister, Pam Bethscheider, in the Church office  at 281-482-7630 or newcomers@gshepherd.net.

If you are interested finding out more about Good Shepherd or the Episcopal Church, please feel free to call the Church Office as well. Your questions are encouraged and always welcome!

Holy Baptism

Baptism is the means by which we become members of the community of believers, defined in the New Testament as the Body of Christ. Just as Jesus was baptized with water by John the Baptist, we include people in the community of faith by baptizing them with water. Following a series of questions, responses and prayers, the priest pours water on the candidate. The sign of the cross may be made on the candidate’s forehead with blessed oil. In the Episcopal Church, a person is baptized only once.

Our next scheduled Baptism is set for Transfiguration Sunday, August 5, 2018.  If you are interested in becoming Baptized or having your child(ren) Baptized, please contact our Parish Administrator, Amanda DeViney, by July 13, 2018.  Please note that Good Shepherd Episcopal Church requires parents and Godparents to complete Baptismal classes prior to the Baptism.

Confirmation

Confirmation is when a baptized person, who has been instructed in the Christian faith, makes a mature commitment to God within a worship setting and receives a special blessing and prayer from a bishop.

Visiting Bishop, Rt. Rev. Hector Monterroso confirmed, reaffirmed and received 10 candidates at the 10:15 a.m. service on Sunday, May 20, 2018.

Liturgy of Belonging

A Liturgy of Belonging was held on Sunday, May 6, 2018 for six newcomers. The Liturgy of Belonging is our way of welcoming newcomers who have decided to join* our church family! New members come to us in a variety of ways and this is our opportunity, as a church family, to officially welcome them - whether they have transferred their letter from another Episcopal church, joined us from a different denomination, or have never had a church home. This short liturgy, which is held during a worship service, includes vows for both the new members and the congregation. The members of the congregation pledge to encourage and support the new members, and acknowledge that the body of Christ will grow in new ways with its growth in numbers.

*Membership, in the Episcopal Church, is traditionally done through a letter of transfer from a previous Episcopal church.  Letters of transfer must be requested seperately.  The Liturgy of Belonging describes membership in the more organic sense, concluding that one wishes to worship with this body of parishioners.
